Dr. Florence Sylvestre, Paleoclimatologist, Director of Research at IRD (Research Institute of Development) is based at CEREGE (Research Institute in Geosciences) in Aix-en-Provence, France.
Her research is focused of the understanding of past and current climate changes under tropical latitudes. She has 25 years expertise in the reconstruction of environmental changes (from modern to million years timescale) based on diatom analysis, which comprises taxonomic and statistic approaches. More recently, she has contributed to develop an innovative methodology involving the oxygen isotopic composition from diatoms as a direct tracer of the climatic parameters. She includes these expertises in the understanding of lacustrine systems, with modelling approach and satellite hydrology. After 15 years in South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, French Guiana), since 2010, she is mainly investigated on Lake Chad Basin and Chadian lakes, her objectives being to understand their past and current hydrological cycle in order to better estimate their potential as water resources in Sahel area.
Since September 2020, she is based in Chad where she is representing IRD, and in position at the University of N’Djamena.
